Established in 1947, the Rhode Island
Interscholastic Injury Fund is a nonprofit Rhode Island corporation constituted
for the purpose of raising, maintaining, and administering funds to the schools
in Rhode Island Interscholastic League who, because of injuries to their
athletes, have depleted their budgets.
The fund considers payment of medical, dental
and physical therapy bills for injuries incurred by an athlete, coach, or
official participating in a sanctioned interscholastic league event. The fund
considers bills, which exceed the amount covered by an eligible athlete's
primary insurance coverage. It is important to note that the injury fund is not
an insurance company.
Presently, the Rhode Island Field Hockey
Coaches' Association sponsors an Injury Fund Round Robin Tournament held on the
first weekend following the required five days of practice that follows the
opening of the fall season.
The Tournament is divided into a morning and
afternoon session, with teams arbitrarily assigned to each session. Each team
is scheduled to play four 15 minute games.
Teams are required to collect donations from
their players, coaches and fans. This donation should be given to the president
or treasurer of the coaches' association who will in turn send the collected
money to the Injury Fund. If teams do not participate in the Injury Fund
Tournament, they are required to make their own arrangements in designating a
particular game as their Injury Fund Game. They are also required to send
individually their donations to the Injury Fund so that their athletes will be
covered by the fund.
